Install better fonts than the default:

# cd /usr/ports/x11-fonts/liberation-fonts-ttf
# make install clean
# cd /usr/ports/x11-fonts/webfonts
# make install clean
# cd /usr/ports/x11-fonts/terminus-font
# make install clean

Options for terminus-font:

  • Check DV1
  • Check GQ2
  • Check IJ1
  • Check TD1

Lock the terminus font because we do not want pkg to reinstall it with the default options on the next update:

# pkg lock terminus-font

Edit Section "Files" of xorg.conf:

        FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts/local/"
        FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts/Liberation/"
        FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts/webfonts/"
        FontPath "/usr/local/share/fonts/terminus-font/"

Fonts configuration

This is done by creating /usr/local/etc/fonts/local.conf. Have a look at mine for example. It uses Liberation as system fonts and has the settings to make fonts look better.

The alternative to fonts/local.conf is fonts/conf.d directory. See README there for instructions.
